Cover/ Logo Claire's Session

Logo Developing: Learning what makes a good logo.
In Friday's lessons we where looking at logo designs. we where given a random two slips of paper and had to create a company around it. Our groups was the elderly and bicycles. we had a brain storm of ideas for names, logo designs and what not, ended up choosing comfort light as the name and the logo that i created. For the logo i wanted to make sure that it was a clear and easy symbol that is recognisable as a bike, but also symbolise the accommodation it has been adapted for the elderly's use. Hence the addition of the wing, as feathers are a known soft item, and it plays well to the company's name 'Light'. It was received well by the tutors but the summary of the premise and aim of the company could have been improved on when we were delivering it.

Book Cover: What goes into making a successful cover.
The following Friday we where working on how to develop a successful cover for a story. Once again we where given prompts which where:
Target: Young Adult
Title: Decedents of Yesterday
Genre: Thriller

All members of the group designed different variants and then voted for their favourites. There was a little bit of tension as the one that I thought was most fitting was one of my own, and was supported by some of the other members. However, as my designs often get picked it was obvious that they wanted a change so we went along with it.
These where the design ideas of all the group members.

This was the design that they decided on and was submitted, however it wasn't received entirely well by the tutors. They mentioned the writing was messy, the colours where dull and the smaller watches weren't clear that they where pocket watches. There was also the addition of the fact the title was changed to 'Time' rather than 'Yesterday'. Finally the tutors made a couple of comments that they preferred the idea of the covers featuring the gears, one of which was the design I wanted to submit. But it all was a learning curve for the members and myself included. Below is the design:

Bone Rank System

I thought, since it is quite prominent in my story, that i would delve into the Korean Silla Dynasty's bone rank system  to get a clear understanding of just what it means. The Bone Rank System, so called because it was based on a person’s hereditary bloodline, was introduced as part of a new law  in 520 CE by king Beophung. However,  GolPum system was technically abolished with the fall of Unified Silla in 935. This is the simplest diagram I could find which explained the kind of standing that people had, and how it corroborated with their title. First of, a Sunggol or 'Sacred Bone' They have to be directly related to royalty on BOTH sides of their parents. Up until King Muyeol, only a Sunggol could ascend to the throne. It was due to the lack of an adequate male Sunggol which made it possible for both Queen Seon Duk and Queen Jindeok to ascend to the throne. They were the last of the Sunggols. Jingol 진골 also known as “True Bone” refers to som...

Stoke Con Trent Review

Selling at Stoke-on-Trent is now my fourth convention to sell at, and although reasonably quiet still pulled a reasonable profit of £69.50. Surprisingly the thing that was most popular was a 7 postcard set of the BTS members which where £1 each or all 7 for £5. The deal seemed go down a treat, selling out of all prints including the display ones before we packed up. Other than that, two Haikyuu Kageyama A4 digital prints sold, plus several key rings and stickers. On previous experiences I had disagreeable table partners or have tabled on my own. This time around however, I ended up tabling with a friend of mine, whom will be my partner for comic con too. This was our practice set up and experiment on how we work together and i have to admit it went well! Other than her forgetting one or two things at the beginning and having to return home to get them, everything went according to plan. However this is what it was for, this is the time to make mistakes and learn from them. I fe...

Double Page Research

Double Pages One of my double page spreads will be a continuous image exploding across the page. I have researched some of existing ones to see how they appear within existing books. Some are a continuous image, others have a bar of white down the middle to show where the page divides. This is to stop some of the artwork being lost in the binding. I think this approach is actually quite clever as it does preserve the artwork. I have drawn it on one A3 page, so that it divides up on 2 A4's or A5's. But I was concerned on how it would be seen on the page when contained within a book.
