Incantations:
Every series is different, sometimes creating their own original spell like quotes or using old magic ones derived from old religions supposedly practised throughout history. Their is several ways to deliver these lines, either in lost languages such as Latin or Ancient Greek. But some prefer to stick to the simple everyday native tongue. others choose not to use any verbally spoken words at all, however want my characters have to perform incantations.
There is three types of 'magic' in my story. One that stems from the old lost magyk and curses, the second derived from the alchemic practices and the third being taken from religious and other worldly communications and summoning.
But for the purpose for this specific story, i will be focusing on the Alchemy Demon trans-mutating practices. The word "alchemy" is derived from the Medieval Latin word alchimia, which is in turn derived from the Arabic word al-kimia (الكيمياء); Islamic alchemy formed the basis for Medieval alchemy, in the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe.
First of I am taking a look at existing methods to portray alchemy and magically inclined rituals. The one that comes to mind is the manga under the names of "Fullmetal Alchemist" by Hiromu Arakawa and "Kuroshitsuji" by Yana Toboso.
The latter of the two focuses on Victorian England and the premise that demons exist among us, and perform contracts with humans in exchange for devouring their soul. These contracts are shown by matching marks on both the human and demon. For this contract a spoken spell is not used, but instead functions on the premise that if you are desperate enough your mind and soul will call out to the demon who in turn will materialise in front of you, agreeing to complete one goal in exchange for the callers soul and ultimately their death,
Similarly Fullmetal Alchemist also doesn't rely on a spoken word, but on ones inner refined power and a drawn magic circle. What personally intrigues me about these two isnt neccesarily the methods of how they are performed or made, but instead the physical counter parts that comes with them.
I have studied magical circles before this date, however not the method of how they would be drawn. The idea of a body tattoo or ink is rather intriguing, but also the activation side of things excluding the verbal approach. A common technique is to use a splash of the castors blood, cutting their hand or thumb, before proceeding to the spell. I think I will used the body art technique, and possible even the blood one too.
Verbal Incantations:
Now for this several different Manga's come to mind. The first being Naruto, which through the harnessing of chakra and hand seals can produce a wide range of Jutsus. The spoken side of things is reasonably simple and is spoken in the native tongue of the characters (Japanese/ English etc depending on location and translation) These short combinations tend to gravitate towards the names of animals such as Boar or Snake. But had the hand sybols to accompany them, as if acting like a magic circle in order to concentrate and funnel the energy through the caster.
Another is the anime based on a visual novel, Fate / Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works (Type Moon). Particularly focusing on the antagonist/ antihero Archer Emiya. In order to create one of his ultimate moves, (transporting his adversaries to a different world which has every weapon he has ever created as his time as an heroic spirit) he uses this word incantation:
The English Version:
I am the bone of my sword
Steel is my body and fire is my blood
I have created over a thousand blades
Unknown to Death,
Nor known to Life.
Have withstood pain to create many weapons
Yet, those hands will never hold anything
So as I pray, Unlimited Blade Works.
Literal English Translation
My body is made out of swords.
My blood is of iron and my heart of glass.
I have overcome countless battlefields.
Not even once retreating,
Not even once being understood.
He was always alone, intoxicated with victory in a hill of swords.
Thus, his life has no meaning.
That body was certainly made out of swords.
This almost poetic method suits my style quite well, and seems fitting for the story. It also makes the spell easier to understand. However i want to create mine with a little twist- i have decided it is going to be in Latin. Mainly because it seems more magical and fantasy like, but also because it gives the reader a little hidden secret if they so choose to research and find out its English translation.
Next I am going to start creating my own. This website however was really interesting, and helped me read up on a lot of things which already exist and people believe. https://www.spellsofmagic.com/
