Front Cover

Designing my front cover! Using Medibang as the main source for adding colour, I am beyond pleased with the outcome. Using one of my perspective drawings of the shrine I designed, I chose an area I wanted it to be situated. I want to include the three main characters, but not the extra's s of yet, i want them to remain in the story alone. I went through the roughest sketch through to line art and colour all digitally. I had this idea for the cover since the beginning and finally getting to draw it is exciting. For the rough sketch I used Clip Studio Paint EX, Line art was Paint Tool SAI, Colouring was Medi Band and the final effects where added with Photoshop CS6. I am really pleased with the final outcome, it is quite brightly coloured and at an interesting angled, but isn't too busy or overwhelming. I think the composition is just about right in terms of balance, and quite effective with the sunset backdrop. For the title the disjointed font is qui

Conclusion

Conclusion: This project has been a first for me in terms of completing a entire start to end comic in a standard which would be acceptable to publish.  Looking back over the project there are a couple areas I would probably have tweaked in order to save time, and make the work process a little cleaner and more efficient, such as more research on specific topics or do slightly more planning on locations and size proportions of characters to the surrounding backgrounds and such. But either way I have found this to be a successful project, and have come out the other end with something I am actually proud of. As I am naturally very critical of my own work, there are pages I wish I had changed a little, improved the artwork or colouring technique on. But I feel it is a healthily low number, so it shouldn’t affect my confidence when pitching it and trying to get people as invested in the characters as I am. With Stoke-Con now under my belt, refreshing my mind to what tabling really entail

Double Page Research

Double Pages One of my double page spreads will be a continuous image exploding across the page. I have researched some of existing ones to see how they appear within existing books. Some are a continuous image, others have a bar of white down the middle to show where the page divides. This is to stop some of the artwork being lost in the binding. I think this approach is actually quite clever as it does preserve the artwork. I have drawn it on one A3 page, so that it divides up on 2 A4's or A5's. But I was concerned on how it would be seen on the page when contained within a book.

Meetings:

11/4/18 Three weeks are left before the deadline and the stress has begun to raise its head. Its apparent in all the 5 members attending, myself included. Although I am proud to see that instead of panicking and submitting to the pressure, everyone is raising their work effort and trying their best to meet the deadline head-on. The table dimensions was posted today for the MCM table which is 2 x 6 foot. In the following weeks we will discuss the presentation method and display ideas for the table. We also discussed the possibility of business cards and other merchandise for our group. Millie is still waiting on  response from her father on the car arrangements, which means there is a halt in buying train tickets for the moment. MCM has rather strict rules against fanart if you are not behind a dealers table so original artworks will be required, weather it is comic influenced or not is another matter entirely and a personal decision. Again the banner was discussed, but we came to

Screen Printing : Gareths Lesson

Due to personal illness I was unable to attend the original lesson that the screen printing took place in. Therefore I completed it at a later date. As I was present for the tutorials on how to do it, I arranged a time with one of our tutors and proceeded to do a tester on the tote bag. I had several ideas when it came to designs to screen print such as our group publishing logo, or perhaps a logo from within the story I have been illustrating. However I ended up settling on the little puppet creature in my story which goes by the name of Loic. I though this would be challenging in both design and cutting out the stencil. But also would be a cute design which someone might be interested in buying/ winning in a 20p per ticket raffle. The process: After designing the image I wanted in a black and white scale, I had to figure out how it would appear once inked through, what parts would need an extra line to show the outline, and what places needed to be blacked out. After going t

Tuesday 24th April: Salesmanship

On Tuesday we had a lecture on how to sell and present yourself at comic con. It was quite a helpful session. In terms of presenting my work on the stall we where shown the shoe cubes, and acrylic book stands (i already own both) but also a wooden print display i we ended up having large A3 prints. But as i am planning to stay within the A4/A5 spectrum I think I will leave it for now. Packaging wise I still don't know what i will be getting. We where shown examples of both paper and plastic bags. Although I see the branding advantages of using plastic bags, they seem to be a little out of my price range. As a group we where already planning on creating a banner for behind the table, but this reconfirmed how good it is to have one, and how it can draw attention to the table. I am unsure what table cloth well end up using as a group but I assume it will be black since it compliments all of our comics.  Arrangement wise, Millie and myself are going to be the pair who goes i

Printing The Comic

The initial plan was to print it through the university as they offered for us to have 20 books printed for free. However its with the condition that all profits go to them. But since I put so much effort in, and saving up for both a Japanese course in London over the summer, and the Japan trip itself, I am rather inclined to print it outside of the university and retain the profits I mike. I did work out how much it would cost me to do it through the university, and it turned out to be a very expensive option. With orders already coming in from my following on Instagram, and from friends and family I plan to get quite a large amount printed. With orders steadily rising, and roughly 200 foot traffic per day at the comic con I am looking to get around 100 copies done, as well as take orders in case I run out. As it is such a large quantity, and we are not staying at a hotel I will take the 80 copies up with me to London, and take 20 to the actual con. Since there wont be much space b

Profile Pages

As I want to include an illustrative page it means I have a age to spare, and instead of keeping it blank I thought I could fill it with a profile page you see often in published manga. These usually consist of a full of half body drawing of specific characters along side a few key elements of information such as age, height and blood type. Above shows a couple of varying styles approaching this. Some just has a list, others have power charts and paragraphs. As I have a couple of plot devices/ terminologies which people reading might nit understand, I want to include a brief explanation for each of those too. I will likely end up doing a mixture of both, but I will be using a full body illustration and it will be inked not sketched. However, due to it being near the beginning of the book, I will likely only have Ronin and Loic featuring on it not Juno or Akue.
