Laser cutting

This was a workshop provided by one of our tutors who thought it would be helpful for us to look int possible ideas that are a little less conventional to advertise our product. Each group was given a square of wood which we could use for whatever we wanted. We decide to stay simple and just have our logo printed on it to get an idea of the depth, speed and timing that it takes to get something cut. Using the logo design I came up with, Jasz made it into a Illustration file which we then took to the department. It was cut swiftly and without much problem. I had previous knowledge on laser cutting from my course in graphic products which we used it frequently. However it was fun to refresh my skills with using it. Below shows the final product and video of it being cut. We ended up going with a 100-500 cutting style. For my personal product I am interested in getting glasses engraved or something along those lines. However money is slightly sparse at the moment, so it might h

Thumbnails

Thumb Nailing Panels These are the initial thumbnails I have sketched out in my book along with the footnotes on things I have to change, improve and add. I initially planned the page out via a story summary to get a rough idea of my page count, then expanded in areas I felt it was necessary to add depth and a easy route through the story so that the reader can follow with no trouble. I have roughly 24 pages planned and should be able to fill it with no problem, I am hoping I have not made it too fast paced however. I have made sure that a couple pages at the end have been left to allow for an explanation and careful wrapping of any loose ends in the story. I chose this specific backstory because it is quite self contained and can be explained without to much too-ing and fro-ing between past and present, as well as not to complicated. So working steadily away at the thumbnails for my comic, I have been making progress on how I want it laid out and designed. I like t

Meetings

I have been keeping track and writing reports on a word document, and have combined it into one blog post up to the current date. This is because it is for personak record and reflection and not necessarily for readers. 7/2/18 All members attended aside from Vicky who was absent again. The first topic that was covered was to do with travel to MCM as the cost will rise exponentially towards the time. Not to mention for above ground trains to and from london will likely get booked out. So for convenience sake we thought we would look into it now. Our team member Millie lives in close proximity to London, this would save on the accommodation fee's, averaging around £70 - £120. Travel expenses will hopefully cost around £65 to and from the comic con over the weekend. We plan to sell at the April Stoke Con to help establish our teams and stall displays. This will hopefully aid us in our set up at MCM in the summer. The next topic was to look at where everyone was at. Giving a de

Book Binding Workshop

Book Binding We where looking at different methods of bookbinding, and how it can change the entire aesthetic of a book. We where later then tasked with testing out different methods for ourselves. I chose the hardest out of the three we where given to choose from which was the love hearts. I found it slightly confusing to begin with, but as I got the hang of it it went reasonably smoothly. Below shows what I ended up producing and the social media coverage I also published. I was then intrigued by the different methods of book bindings that comics and art books can use, so decided to further research the subject. Reading up on all of the different stitching methods, my personal favourite is either side binding (Done by hand like I did in the above task) or tape bound. I love the tape bound idea because of the personal touch that can be added, but also the neatness and quite a smooth aesthetic which is a preference of mine. However they are both rather labour inten

Claire Session: Maths and Business Cards

Business Cards First Up the session focused on advertising ourselves, primarily through business cards. This applies to use as individuals and as a publishing house. Personally from what techniques were suggested, I really liked the idea of either using drop gloss business cards or transparent acrylic ones. Perhaps using the latter for more important clients such as prospect commissioners or companies. Although they are initially quite pricey, I believe the aesthetic will be worth it. It leaves a professional and stylised look which is key when you are an artist. You also want something that grabs their attention, and encourage them to show others. Key advertising is by word of mouth, so trying to increase the likely hood of this is always going to be helpful.  We were tasked to design rough concept ideas for our group business cards if we where to carry on the publishing house after university. The designs are below: The next session was on profits and costs which can be c

Style of my comic

Style: What colouring style will I be looking at using for my comic? Ideally i would love to have a fully coloured comic but still using the manga style, like a cross between a manga ( Greyscale Japanese influenced style) and a Manhwa (Korean coloured webcomic). Below is the mood boards I created to help me decide. Time wise I  know with my style I will find it hard to do this quantity of pages in the time frame given. So I will likely conform to the normal manga style using screen tones a grey scale cell shading. I was feeling a little dejected about what colour style I should use when i came across this anime called Katsugeki Touken Ranbu. Aside from loving the characters and story arc's I fell in love with the opening. It had this greyscale block harsh colour scheme which quickly changed to this vibrant beautifully coloured anime. I was thinking of adapting this for my manga, having the majority of the comic in this harsh yet beautiful greyscale style, then the l
